Your journey through Germany’s landscapes and cultural nuances is a delight to read. It’s so wonderful to see how you capture the essence of these places with such genuine warmth and curiosity.
Thank you so much Didier! I get so overwhelmed by the details, I must tell you. I always wonder how people can do so much in such a short trip. I really have to savour! Please do come back for part two, it has my favourite parts of Germany in it <3
Loved this reflection and how you got to explore (and ponder) your connection to Germany. Stuttgart was actually the first time I ever went to Europe (for a distant cousin’s wedding!) and I don’t hear it mentioned often so it was fun to reminisce!
Wowow! Yeah it’s so funny how that seems to be the case with Stuttgart but it was actually my favourite. In part 2 I’ll get to Stuttgart more centrally~ Thank you for taking the time today Zefan
Read this while listening to some lofi and felt lovingly nourished and sufficiently inspired afterwards. Hamburgs sounds like my kind of city! I've heard so much about the EDM clubs there and am dying to check them out myself.
Equally spaced cars on a highway is crazyyyy america could never lol
I love the little pumpkin interaction you had at the end! I know the feeling of those small moments, being part of someone else's story if only for a moment. What a wonderful feeling of fleeting but lasting connection.
I love this Rae. I can connect in so many ways, being a migrant in Germany now no less. Thanks for reminding me the beautiful things about Germany :) one can forget after living here for 8 years. It's so fun to visit part of your ancestry, I still recall being shocked when I visited
China, but I surely most go back at least to the areas where my ancestors are from, after all, China is like a continent, and each part can differ so much too.
I'm so glad you enjoyed it Rachel!! I think a lot of expanding CQ is comparing our images and thoughts that we had before with open-minded experiences we have in the actual place. Where in Germany are you? The North or South? --I went to your profile and saw that you were Chinese-Malaysian. I am SO interested in Malaysia and have this gut feeling the Chinese diaspora in Jamaica has a lot of connections with the Malaysian one somehow as well. Where in China did you go? Where is your family from?
I'm living now in Freiburg, that's the r southwest of Germany, close to the borders of France and Switzerland!
In China, I went to Beijing, Ping Yao, Xi-An, Kunming and a few smaller places in between. My ancestors are from the area of Fujian and Guangzhou, though sadly we don't have any more specific information to be sure where exactly, I can only guess from their dialects/clan/surnames. One grandpa is Hakka, so possibly also other multiple places!
I have so little knowledge about Chinese diaspora in Jamaica, I need to read up and of course, follow you on your stories! Surely we Chinese diasporas must have a lot of intersections.
Part 2 of this article will be more on my love of South Germany! Hope you will enjoy that one too 🤍🤍🤍
I’m currently living in Suzhou near Shanghai, and certainly all of those places you listed are quite different from the South, near Guangzhou/Fujian. Chinese people tend to keep great records of family though! You may be able to figure it out sometime. My family did on both sides.
Jamaica is such a small place, most people know nothing and I don’t blame them! I first caught my interest in Malaysia because I saw a skincare brand of a Chinese-Malaysian with my last name, spelt like I spell it! Which I thought was crazy 😂😂 My family and most of the Jamaican diaspora are all Hakka— so also from Guangzhou/Fujian laaa ❤️❤️❤️
Would be great to get to know you and your story more in the future!
